FAQ – Crampons & Gaiters
What is the difference between crampons and mountaineering crampons?
Crampons are lightweight spike systems for regular winter hiking trails with ice and hard snow sections. Mountaineering crampons are heavy, rigid systems for alpine terrain, glacier tours, and steep ice walls. Crampons fit regular hiking boots, while mountaineering crampons require special soles.
Do gaiters fit all shoes?
Gaiters come in size ranges (S/M/L) and attach to the shoe with Velcro, hooks, or elastic bands. Most models fit standard hiking boots. Check the fit for your shoe model – if necessary, read the product description.
When do I need crampons?
As soon as paths are icy or covered with hard snow – typically from October to April at mid-altitudes, year-round above 1500 m. Trails on north-facing slopes and in the shade can also be icy in summer.
