Crampons: What are they & what are they used for?

Winterwanderung mit Grödeln auf verschneitem Pfad

Ice cleats — also known as ice spikes, shoe spikes, or microspikes — are metal chains with spikes that you stretch over your shoes. They transform normal hiking boots into slip-resistant winter footwear and can be a lifesaver on ice and hard-packed snow.

What exactly are microspikes?

A set of microspikes consists of a rubber harness or chain frame that is stretched over the shoe, featuring 6 to 18 metal spikes (2–10mm in length) on the sole. They work at temperatures below 0°C as soon as ice or hard snow is present.

Compared to professional crampons, microspikes are lighter, more affordable, and suitable for normal hiking boots — whereas crampons require rigid mountaineering boots.

When do I need microspikes?

Condition Recommendation
Powder snow, loose Gaiters are sufficient
Hard-packed snow ✅ Microspikes recommended
Icy trails ✅ Microspikes necessary
Steep ice gullies Crampons + ice axe
Glacier mountaineering Crampons mandatory

How to put on microspikes

  1. Place the microspikes on the ground, spikes facing down
  2. Place your shoe into the rubber harness/frame
  3. Pull the front loop over the toe of the shoe
  4. Stretch the back buckle over the heel
  5. Check the fit: no slipping, no pinching

Microspikes vs. Crampons — what's the difference?

  • Microspikes: For hiking boots, winter hiking, city ice, hut approaches — 6–18 spikes, 200–400g
  • Crampons: For alpine routes, glaciers, steep ice — 10–14 points, require a rigid sole

Microspikes, ice cleats, shoe spikes, or snow chains for shoes — what is what?

They almost always refer to the same product. Grödel (often called Grödeln in Austria and Bavaria) is the traditional alpine term, while in stores they are also known as shoe spikes, ice cleats, microspikes, or snow chains for shoes. The differences lie in their construction:

  • Chain microspikes (e.g., Chain Pro 18): Stainless steel chains with longer points attached to a rubber harness. They provide the best grip on ice and hard snow, making them the top choice for winter hikes and hut approaches.
  • Ice cleats / shoe spikes with a rubber sole: Short spikes embedded directly into the rubber. Lighter and quicker to put on, ideal for icy everyday paths and short sections.
  • Crampons are not microspikes: They have long front points, require crampon-compatible mountaineering boots, and belong in the high mountains.

Microspikes at Alpin Loacker

Our Chain Pro 18 microspikes feature 18 stainless steel points on chains and fit over hiking boots, trail runners, and winter boots. They are available in three sizes based on shoe size (M 36–40, L 41–44, XL 44–47). You can find all models for ice and snow under Microspikes & Gaiters.

For icy sidewalks, the commute to work, or walking the dog in the morning, lighter shoe spikes are sufficient: 10 stainless steel spikes in an elastic silicone harness, 200 g per pair, slipped over sneakers, boots, or low shoes in seconds, and complete with a storage bag for your jacket pocket. They are not intended for mountain tours and steep, icy hiking trails — that's what chain microspikes are for.

Frequently Asked Questions about Microspikes

Do microspikes fit on any shoe?

On almost any closed shoe with a treaded sole: hiking boots, trail running shoes, winter boots. The right size is important. If the rubber harness is too large, the chains will slip under the sole.

Can I walk on asphalt or rock with microspikes?

Short stretches are no problem, but the points will wear down faster on hard surfaces. On smooth tiles or indoors, you actually slip more easily with spikes. Therefore, take off your microspikes before entering a hut, train, or car.

How do I care for my microspikes after a tour?

Rinse them with water, let them dry completely, and only then pack them into the bag. This prevents the chains from rusting and keeps the rubber elastic.

What do professionals wear under their microspikes?

Merino hiking socks are ideal — they keep you warm, prevent pressure points from the harness, and remain odor-free even after hours of use. Alpin Loacker merino hiking socks are highly recommended by many winter hikers specifically for these conditions.
